An Emblematic Visual Signal

The state of Arctic flora biodiversity is a relatively untold story, often running contrary to the commonly held misconception that polar ecosystems are barren icy wastelands.
The Arctic is undergoing stress that risks radically redefining its geography, biodiversity, and political status. Not only does this transformation affect the Arctic, there will be global consequences.

An emblematic visual signal urges awareness of the issues at stake by introducing four flowers endemic to the Arctic region, representative of issues or cultural icons spanning nations and civilisations.

Whether as symbols of native wisdom, indigenous timekeepers, invasive aliens, or simply survivors, each species assumes the role of narrator for aspects of life in the North, relating diverse tales of adaptation which together provide clues to the future of Arctic flora biodiversity.

Illumination

Illuminations is divided into two parts. One half is a series of photographs taken by Christopher Taylor. His images reflect on the past, his childhood memories and explore emotions. The second half assumes the form of a brief family archive in chronological order, complementing his photographs. View book Here

You’re moving electrons instead of moving atoms [physically]

You’re moving electrons instead of moving atoms [physically] attempts to ground digital activity without losing sight of its generative capacities. Electric energy, used to fuel the infrastructure for our most mundane online use, is profoundly shaped by data acting as if it were symbolic and immaterial — while in fact being an active agent. Our interaction with computers has become semi-automated manual labour as physical gestures become ingrained in daily behaviour.
In the digital choreography installation, the question that is articulated is; What if the electric energy consumption of semi-automated online gestures are instead transposed as bodily movement?

Ads in lieu of news

Ads in lieu of news is composed of a website and a newspaper.
The starting point of this project is an exploration of a daily newspaper and visualising the format in a different direction.
My personal interest in archives shaped the eventual outcome.
After digging into back-issues of Morgunbladid, a leading Icelandic Newspaper, I gathered 1000 advertisements dating from between 1910 and 2000. A collection of 100 layouts per decade. The end result provides a window into the trends of the time and the evolution of the newspaper graphics.

The Bread Keeper

The bread keeper consists of a series of riso posters, glazed clay tools and a video of the installation. The installation highlights the essential entities of the terrestrial and artefacts that generate new narratives. Various chronicles are presented through hanging posters.
I question the symbolism of bread and the power structure behind it. Bread signifies security. Bread is representative of life and the livelihood that allows for the flourishing of that life.
The dualities of Wealth/Poverty, Indulgence/Austerity are at the source of bread’s mythology as both something people deserve and something that people should be grateful to obtain.

SOUND SHIFTING

Sound shifting is a book that reflects on the amplitude of how muic is taking part in our daily life.
Music and emotion are closely interrelated.
However, such mood changes not only how you feel, but also your perception and actions. Why did music take so much importance within this society?
The book contains a scientific approach as well as social and psychological witch is split in chapters with taking as example my own Icelandic culture.

7steps

Collection of 7 archives left behind by my grandfather, reflecting his personal interests. My granddad was a collector, mostly of books, photography, videos, and music. He was especially fond of Mahler, Kilvert, Shakespeare and was interested in politics. The book contains 365 pages divided into 7 chapters, each of which presents a compilation of found material. Page numbers are attributed to a diary in which he recorded his daily activities. 7 steps is about the preservation of his memory and findings. Long forgotten objects resurfacing from the past, recalling poignant memories.
